What Is Piano Consignment?

You own the piano.
We do the work.

Selling a piano privately is harder than it looks. Most people don't know what their instrument is worth, don't have a platform to reach serious buyers, and don't want strangers coming to their home to look at it. Then there's the question of moving it — which adds cost and logistics to an already complicated process.

Consignment solves all of that. You sign a simple agreement, we take over the selling process, and you receive the net proceeds once the instrument sells. Your piano stays at your location until a qualified buyer is arranged and payment is complete.

As a Certified Piano Technician, Davis Moore is uniquely positioned to represent your instrument accurately — assessing its true condition, setting a fair asking price, and fielding questions from buyers who want a technician's honest opinion before they commit.

Why It Works

Priced by a technician

Not guessed at. We know what instruments in your condition actually sell for in this market.

Marketed professionally

Listed on our website, social media, and relevant marketplaces — with professional photos and a CPT-written description.

No strangers at your door

We coordinate all viewings and trial play sessions. You set the availability; we handle the scheduling.

You get paid promptly

Net proceeds are paid to you within 14 business days of receiving full payment from the buyer.

The Process

How consignment works.

Four steps from inquiry to sold. You're involved at the beginning and at the end — we handle everything in between.

1

Get in Touch

Call or email with basic details about your piano — make, model, approximate age, and condition. We'll let you know within one business day whether it's a good consignment candidate and what we'd expect it to sell for.

2

Sign the Agreement

If we move forward, we sign a simple consignment agreement that specifies the listing price, the minimum sale price, and the commission structure. No surprises — everything is in writing before we start.

3

We List & Market It

We photograph the instrument, write the listing, and put it in front of serious buyers through our website, social channels, and relevant marketplaces. Your piano stays at your location throughout.

4

You Get Paid

Once a buyer is secured and payment received, we deduct our commission and send you the net proceeds within 14 business days. The buyer arranges moving at their expense.

Transparent Pricing

Our commission structure.

Our commission is tiered — the higher the sale price, the smaller our percentage. This aligns our incentive directly with yours: we want to sell your piano for as much as possible.

We will never sell your instrument below the minimum sale price agreed to in the consignment agreement without your prior written consent.

If service work is needed to improve marketability — a tuning, minor regulation, cleaning — costs above $100 require your approval in advance and are deducted from proceeds at time of sale.

Sale Price Range Our Commission You Receive
Up to $1,00035%65%
$1,001 – $3,00030%70%
$3,001 – $6,00025%75%
Over $6,00020%80%

Proceeds paid within 14 business days of receipt of full payment from the buyer. Commission covers all listing, marketing, and buyer coordination — no additional fees.

Why Moore Piano Services

What sets us apart.

Anyone can list a piano. Not everyone can represent it accurately to serious buyers.

Credibility

A CPT-backed listing

Buyers trust listings backed by a Certified Piano Technician. When we describe a piano's condition, they know it's an informed assessment — not a seller's guess. That credibility commands better prices and closes sales faster.

Reach

The right audience

Our website, Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube channels are followed by piano owners, teachers, and buyers across the Upstate. Your listing goes in front of people who are already looking for exactly what you have.

Honesty

We tell you what it's worth

We won't take a piano we can't sell, and we won't set a price we can't defend. If consignment isn't the right path for your instrument, we'll tell you — and point you toward a better option, including our Retired Piano Program.

What We Accept

Instruments we can represent.

Not every piano is a good consignment candidate. We focus on instruments we can honestly represent to buyers at a price that makes the process worthwhile for everyone involved.

Quality upright pianos Baldwin, Yamaha, Kawai, Steinway (Boston), Sohmer, and comparable brands in playable condition.
Grand pianos Baby grands and full grands from reputable manufacturers — condition assessed case by case.
Restored instruments Pianos that have received documented restoration work and can be represented accurately to buyers.
Estate and heirloom pianos Quality instruments from estates where the family wants a careful, respectful sale rather than a quick liquidation.

Not sure if your piano qualifies? Call or email with the make, model, and a brief description of its condition — we'll give you an honest answer at no charge. If consignment isn't right for your instrument, our Retired Piano Program may be a better fit.
